Senior sessions can be hard.
Most of the time, they aren't exactly something teenagers are excited about. They're worried about how they'll look, whether they'll feel awkward, whether they'll know how to pose, and what other people will think when they see their senior photos.
And honestly, I understand why.
The years right before adulthood can be such a strange, vulnerable time. You're figuring out who you are while also becoming increasingly aware of how other people see you. Body image can feel fragile. Acne feels like the first thing everyone notices. Every little insecurity can suddenly seem enormous.
They see the things they wish they could change.
I don't.
When I look through my camera, I don't see the acne. I don't see the awkwardness. I don't see the "flaws" they've convinced themselves they have. I see an incredible young person standing on the edge of something completely new.
As a senior photographer serving Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Spokane, and North Idaho, that's one of my favorite parts of what I do. I get to see past the insecurities and capture the person underneath them.
I see confidence that might not be there yet. I see personality, curiosity, humor, strength, softness, and all the little pieces that make each senior who they are.
And I get to capture that moment before everything changes.
Senior Photos Should Feel Like You
I don't think senior photography needs to fit into one specific mold.
Your senior photos don't have to mean standing in a field in a pretty dress, smiling at the camera.
Sometimes we're taking photos with carrots at a flower farm because that's what feels like you.
Sometimes we're running through the water, getting soaked, and creating images that make you feel like a goddess.
Sometimes it's music, movement, laughter, and a little bit of chaos.
Sometimes it's quiet and cinematic.
Your senior photography session should reflect who you are right now, not who you think you're supposed to be.

One of the biggest things I hear from seniors is that they're worried they won't know what to do in front of the camera.
You don't have to. That's my job.
I'll give you easy direction and prompts throughout your session so you don't have to stand there wondering what to do with your hands or whether you're posing "right." We'll move, talk, laugh, change things up, and find the angles and moments that feel natural.
And if something doesn't feel like you, we'll change it.
The goal isn't to make you look like someone else.
The goal is to capture you at your best while still looking like you.

I think that's what makes senior photography so special to me. I get to freeze this tiny moment in time, right before everything changes.
You're not quite a kid anymore, but you're not quite an adult either. You're standing at the beginning of a whole new chapter, and you probably don't even realize how incredible that is yet.
