Fall in North Idaho is one of my favorite times of year for photography. The trees start changing, the light gets softer, and everything seems to take on that warm, cozy feeling that makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
If you're looking for a beautiful place to take family photos this fall, there are so many options around Post Falls and the surrounding area. Some locations give you colorful trees and wooded trails, while others offer water, mountain views, or wide-open spaces.
As a North Idaho family photographer, these are some of my favorite places to photograph during the fall season.
Corbin Park | Post Falls
Corbin Park is hands-down one of my favorite locations for fall family photos.
Located along the Spokane River, Corbin has an incredible amount of variety packed into one location. You can get beautiful river views, a unique rock wall, wooded areas, fall foliage, and long stretches of road lined with trees. The variety means we can create a gallery that feels like we visited several different locations without ever having to leave the park.
One of my favorite things about Corbin in the fall is the way the sun filters through the trees. There are stretches of road where the light peeks through the branches and creates the most beautiful golden glow, especially later in the afternoon.
If you want classic North Idaho fall photos with a little bit of everything, Corbin Park is my first choice.
The park is also a popular recreation area, so I like to plan sessions around the best light and quieter times when possible.
Black Bay Park | Post Falls
Black Bay Park is another beautiful option if you're looking for a more wooded, peaceful feel.
This location sits along the Spokane River and has paved trails, trees, and beautiful water views. It was recently updated and is such a nice, beautiful spot right in the middle of town.
I especially love Black Bay in the evening. The combination of the trees, river, and soft evening light creates a really beautiful setting for relaxed family photos. And the option of the water is great for kiddos who need a little break sometimes!
It's a great choice if you want your session to feel natural and outdoorsy without needing a long hike to find pretty scenery.
Rathdrum Mountain Park | Rathdrum
If you want fall foliage and a little more adventure, Rathdrum Mountain Park is worth considering!
Rathdrum Mountain Park offers trails through the trees, plenty of fall color, and beautiful views as you make your way up the mountain. The area has a more adventurous, mountain feel than some of the riverside parks closer to Post Falls.
This is a great option for families who don't mind a little walking and want their photos to feel like an outdoor adventure.
The views are especially beautiful when the trees are changing and you can see the valley stretching out below.
George Anderl Memorial Park | Hayden
George Anderl Memorial Park is another great option if you're looking for lots of fall color without traveling too far.
This location has a beautiful mix of open space, trees, and trails, giving us plenty of variety without needing to go somewhere complicated.
I love locations like this for family sessions because we can let the kids move around and explore while still getting plenty of beautiful portraits. It's also not too big so there isn't a whole lot of walking involved.
The fall foliage here makes it especially pretty once the leaves start changing!
Falls Park | Post Falls
If you want a beautiful fall location that's easy to get to, Falls Park is one of my favorite options in Post Falls. It's conveniently located right off the highway, which makes it a great choice when you want beautiful scenery without having to travel far or hike a long way to get there.
And despite being so accessible, there's still a lot of variety for photos. You'll find colorful fall foliage, walking paths, a beautiful bridge, weeping willows, and even a small pond. That gives us plenty of different backdrops throughout a session while keeping everything relatively close together.
I especially love Falls Park for families because there's room to walk, explore, and interact naturally while we move through the park. It's a great spot if you want colorful fall family photos with a mix of trees, open paths, and water without having to make a whole adventure out of getting to your photo location.
So Which One is the Best?
Honestly, it depends on the look you're going for and how much walking you want to do during your session.
